GBI releases suspects name in Monday's officer-involved shooting

COVINGTON, Ga. - According to a news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, early information indicates the fatal gunshot wound to the suspect in Monday's officer-involved shooting was self-inflicted. 

The GBI identified the suspect as Aaron Demonta Fleming, 21. Nelly Miles, GBI Office of Public Affairs director, said Fleming's last known address was in Conyers.

"Preliminary information indicates that on Sept. 3, 2018, at approximately 12:24 p.m., Covington police responded to 10300 Industrial Boulevard at Walmart in reference to a shoplifting incident," according to the release. "Officers were advised that a male was seen exiting the store with a bag in his hand.  

"Officer (Matt) Cooper made contact with Fleming and a foot chase ensued.  Fleming ran across the street behind another shopping center where several gunshots were fired.  Officer Cooper was hit by gunfire and airlifted to (WellStar) Atlanta Medical Center.  Fleming sustained a fatal gunshot wound.  Early information indicates that the wound was self-inflicted.

According to the release, the Newton County Sheriff's Office, Social Circle Police Department, Walton County Sheriff's Office, Jasper County Sheriff's Office, Georgia State Patrol and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to assist in the investigation alongside CPD and the GBI. Multiple other agencies also offered assistance. 

"The GBI investigation remains active and ongoing," according to the release.  "Once complete, it will be turned over to the Alcovy Judicial Circuit for review."
