COVINGTON, Ga. - A Covington Police Officer and a male suspect have been shot after an exchange of gunfire following a foot pursuit as part of a shoplifting investigation outside of the Walmart in Covington.

According to a news release from CPD, a black male was seen leaving the store with a bag. He reportedly stopped as he exited the store, as if he was waiting on more people.l 

"One of the subjects was seen running from Walmart towards Little Phillies," according to the release. "A foot chase ensued and the officer confronted the suspect behind Little Phillies.

"There was an exchange of gunfire and both the officer and suspect were shot."
