NEWTON COUNTY – Former All-Cov News MVP Marcus Calwise Jr. is looking for a new home.
On Tuesday, Calwise announced he had entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal after two seasons at Eastern Kentucky. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
“Leaving is never easy, but the relationships and moments I’ve shared here will always stay with me,” Calwise wrote in part in a statement on X. “To my teammates and the friends I’ve made, thank you for riding with me and helping make my time here special. Eastern Kentucky will always have a place in my heart.”
Calwise joined the Colonels after graduating from Newton High School in 2024. He immediately became an impact player as a freshman, grabbing 42 receptions for 526 yards and five touchdowns in 13 games played. For his efforts, he was named to the FCS Football Central Freshman All-American Team.
In his sophomore season, Calwise saw slightly decreased numbers with 32 receptions for 417 yards and five scores in 12 games played. Nonetheless, the mark made him the Colonels top wide receiver for the past two seasons.
With his success at the FCS level, it is expected that Calwise will garner some interest from FBS schools. Liberty, UAB and Western Michigan were among the teams that presented offers during his initial recruiting period.
Before his time at Eastern Kentucky, Calwise was a dominant force for the Newton Rams. He enjoyed a breakout season in 2023 as a do-it-all player going over the 1,000-yard mark in all-purpose yards as well as scoring 14 times.
Calwise’s work as a senior earned him the 2023 All-Cov News MVP award, as well as the a spot on the 4-AAAAAAA All-Region team.
