COVINGTON, Ga. - Investigators with the Covington Police Department (CPD) are investigating a shooting at a gas station Tuesday evening that left one man dead.

According to a press release by CPD Public Information Officer Allan Seebaran, officers responded to the Shell station at Wheat Street and Highway 142 in reference to a person shot shortly after 8 p.m. Aug 1.

According to the release, the shooter, identified as Prince Jacobs, 34, of Stone Mountain, was at the scene and detained by officers without incident. A 9 mm handgun was also seized as evidence. The victim, identified as Terrance Nolley,28, of Covington, was laying between his car and Jacobs’ car in the driveway entrance to the gas station from Hwy 142.

Officers reportedly rendered aid to Nolley until fire and EMS personnel arrived and transported him to Piedmont Newton Hospital where, according to the release, he died.

Seebaran said based on witness statements, Jacobs and Nolley had some type of exchange of words in the parking lot of the store. Jacobs left in his vehicle and was exiting onto Hwy 142 when Nolley passed him and cut him off at the exit of the parking lot, forcing him to stop.

According to the release, Nolley exited his vehicle and began yelling at Jacobs while approaching his car. The release states that Nolley began punching Jacobs in the face through the open car window. Jacobs then shot Nolley twice.

According to the release, witness statements matched the statement of Jacobs indicating that Nolley was the primary aggressor. Both vehicles were seized and are being stored at a CPD facility for evidentiary safekeeping.

Seebaran said Jacobs was interviewed and released and is not currently facing any charges for the incident, which remains under investigation by the CPD Criminal Investigations Division.
