COVINGTON, Ga. - This month, Newton Electric, located at 8155 Highway 278 NE, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Starting in 1967, Newton Electric opened its doors in Covington as an electrical supply company serving Newton County. It is owned by the Smith family. Community roots for the Smith family run deep.
“Prior to Newton Electric, my grandfather owned Covington Electric, a contracting business on the square,” Chris Smith, president of Newton Electric, said.
Newton Electric opened a second location in McDonough in Henry County in 1994. Now, Newton Electric does service in both counties.
Newton Electric provides electrical and lighting supplies to meet residential, commercial and industrial electrical needs. Supplies come from top manufacturers in the industry. Brands such as Milwaukee Tools, Southwire, General Electric and others are sold at Newton Electric. You can purchase a range of electrical products to suit your needs.
“We offer anything electrical – wires, lights, LED products, lighting fixtures, breakers. If you need any electrical replacement, Newton Electric offers it,” Chris Smith said.
Products are quality-made and many have full warranty for any potential defects.
Newton Electric’s staff is ready to help customers find what they need.
“Our staff is well-trained. We have inside and outside sales people and tradesman that can answer any questions customers may have,” Smith said.
As a business, Newton Electric is involved in community service, using its strengths to give back to education and civic organizations.
“We help Newton County College and Career Academy with their electrical classes by providing supplies for the classes,” Smith said. “We also have partnered with Snapping Shoals in the past.”
As Newton Electric reached its 50th anniversary, management is looking for ways to grow.
“Looking back on 50 years, we are learning to adapt to changing community needs, restructuring our business models to better serve Newton County residents,” Smith said.
Newton Electric’s hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
