The basketball regular season has come to an end, the region tournaments are starting soon, baseball and soccer are beginning, but it’s not too early or too late to recognize some of the best basketball players of Newton and Rockdale county. There will be a first and a second all-area team, with the criteria being regular season numbers, level of play, overall impact and of course the “eye test.”

The first team All-area girls’ team is: Shay Tarver (Salem, guard), Alexcia Chatman (Newton, guard), Ayanna Mitchell (Salem, forward), Sydney Fields (Rockdale, forward/guard) and Tierra Hodges (Alcovy, forward).

The second team All-area girls’ team is: Janelle Cook (Eastside, guard), Imani Broadnax (Newton, guard), Asia Caldwell (Heritage, guard), Rayniesha Clay (Eastside, forward/guard) and Ayanna Wimbush (Alcovy, forward).

Honorable mentions: Teirra Brown (Eastside, guard), Alezhia Wilson (Alcovy, forward), Keidra Sears (Alcovy, guard), Jurnee Smith (Newton, guard), Jonai Jackson (Rockdale, guard), Camille Saunders (Heritage, forward), Damali Thomas (Heritage, guard).

The second team All-area boys’ team is: Isaiah Miller (Eastside, guard), Jaquan Sims (Newton, guard), Makyle Wilkerson (Heritage, forward), Chandler Davis (Salem, forward/center) and Isaiah Banks (Heritage, forward).
