MACON, Ga. (AP) — Five sheriff's deputies have been disciplined for their handling of a case involving fisherman who reported someone shooting at them at a middle Georgia lake.

The Telegraph of Macon reports (http://bit.ly/1yWuK9F ) Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said Thursday "a criminal case was jeopardized" by mistakes.

In March, fishermen on Lake Tobesofkee reported gunshots were fired at them from a house. Deputies went to the home but said they weren't allowed inside. They went back days later but found no gun.

On Thursday 24-year-old Basil Ghali turned himself in and was charged with reckless conduct with a firearm, a misdemeanor. The sheriff says felony charges may have resulted if the case wasn't mishandled.

Ghali's attorney, Laura Hogue, says he didn't know anyone was on the lake.
