East Newton Elementary will bring the classic stories of Dr. Seuss to life in a musical extravaganza this weekend in "Seussical the Musical Jr." on Friday May 8 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday May 9 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Alcovy High School.

There's never a dull moment in this Broadway Junior production. The opening number, "Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!" introduces a central theme that runs throughout the musical - it's okay to imagine and dream big dreams. The songs such as "All For You" and "Alone in the Universe" seamlessly blend Seuss's original verse with the couplets involving the musical's own plot.

East Newton's Assistant Principal Fred Forehand, Pauline Stutes and Julie Thompson oversaw and organized the production - no small task with a cast of 52 third, fourth, and fifth graders and a team of parents and volunteers behind the scenes. Marissa Vincent, an Eastside High School student who has performed on stage at the FOX Theater in Atlanta, and East Newton Elementary School's principal Naomi Cobb, choreographed the production. The colorful costumes designed by Marcie Sigman and Donna Weesne and sets designed Cindy Van Dusen help bring to life all the beloved Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, The Grinch, Lazy Mayzie, all of the Whos of Whoville and - of course - the Cat in the Hat, played by Dillon Diamond.

Seussical Jr. is great for kids of all ages. The Broadway Junior program is also designed to benefit students beyond the theater and into the classroom and other areas of their lives. One independent academic recently reported that "The program had a positive impact on school climate; the school community grew stronger and more cohesive and children demonstrated improvement in social skills and relations with others."

Tickets are now on sale for $6 - $12 depending on seating preference. For more information on the production please call (770) 784-2973.
