US 278 roundabout handling traffic Feb. 13
Roundabout
This depicts the “final” configuration when complete

COVINGTON, Ga. - To further US 278/State Route 12 widening and reconstruction, E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. has scheduled a traffic shift into the roundabout configuration at the SR 142 intersection Tuesday, Feb. 13. Vehicles will use a single-lane to navigate through the location once the shift is implemented that day.

The speed limit will be posted at 25 mph, and drivers are encouraged to drive alert under the brand new conditions.

This traffic shift allows construction of new eastbound travel lanes on the overall $19.3 million project that broke ground on March 15, 2017. This change also provides a significant safety improvement over the old SR 142/SR 12 intersection and should greatly improve traffic flow.

This project is widening SR 12 from the Covington city limits to just east of SR 142. When complete, the roadway will consist of two, 12-foot lanes in each direction separated by a 24-foot raised grassed median with 10-foot rural shoulders of which 6.5 feet is paved.

Also included in this project is the aforementioned modern, multi-lane roundabout, a traffic signal at the SR 12 and Elks Club Road intersection and two new bridges over the Alcovy River and Alcovy River Overflow. Completion is expected by May 31, 2020.
