Elks Hoops Shoot winners: East Newton Elementary student Hunter Phillips placed first in the 10-and 11-year-old boys’ group, while Ficquett Elementary student Jemelia Evans was the second place winner in the 8-and 9 -year-old girls’ group.

The Elks National Hoop Shoot program, a free-throw contest, is open to all boys and girls ages 8 through 13. Ray Edwards, Hoop Shoot chairman of the Covington Elks Lodge 1806, with the help of other Elks presented awards to the first and second place winners of every school participating in the program. Edwards had visited every elementary school in the county to talk about the program. On Jan. 25, all of the participants met at Newton High School Gym to compete against each other to be the county-wide winner.

The Elks are very proud of the local winners who will go on to represent Newton County in the District Hoop Shoot during February. In each school the instructor conducts the contest during regular physical education classes.
