COVINGTON, Ga. — A car struck a Newton County resident who was checking the mail Monday.

The Georgia State Patrol responded at about 7 p.m. Monday. It happened in the 1400 block of Georgia 212 in unincorporated Covington.

The GSP said an eastbound GMC Envoy struck an unidentified pedestrian who was checking the mail outside his or her home. The driver of the SUV lost control for an unknown reason and exited the south edge of the road.

The vehicle then struck the pedestrian, who became lodged under the vehicle while it continued to slide until coming to an uncontrolled stop against some trees.

Troopers said the pedestrian was injured and taken to a hospital.

An investigation is in the preliminary stages and remains incomplete, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
