Man shot at while taking out the trash
A Covington man was shot at while taking out the trash Tuesday.
According to reports, Covington Police responded to a call at Hardwick Circle after a man was taking his trash to the roll back dumpster in Sandra Ashby’s yard. The victim told CPD he was bringing out the trash when Ashby stepped out of her front door, pointed a pistol at him and shot it.
The victim then dropped the plastic chairs he was throwing out and ran from the scene. A witness relayed to CPD that Ashby was standing on her front porch when she fired the weapon.
CPD recovered a small .22 caliber pistol from the right side of Ashby’s door near a table on her front porch. According to reports, the pistol contained four live rounds and one spent shell in the cylinder.
Ashby was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and taken to Newton County Law Enforcement Center.
Man arrested in NCSO parking lot
A Monroe police officer observed a driver who he believed to be under the influence pull into the parking lot of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office parking lot Wednesday, around 9:30 p.m.
The Monroe officer told Covington Police that the man driving a gold Chevrolet Trailblazer from I-20 eastbound near mile marker 90 onto Alcovy Road was swerving all over the roadway, had no taillights and was opening the driver’s side door when stopped.
A Covington police officer was arriving on scene at the NCSO parking lot when the suspect, identified as Zachery Cheek, was talking with a third party.
According to reports, CPD immediately observed Cheek was unsteady on his feet as he walked around his car. Cheek also, reportedly, had “very repetitive speech, glazed over eyes and droopy eyelids.”
According to reports, Cheek asked the officer, “what the problem is,” despite having it explained to him several times.
Cheek told the officer he was at the jail to report for work release, after he was previously arrested for theft by receiving prescription medications. He went on to tell officers about a recent incident in which he was caught transporting drugs past the guard line after reportedly being forced by someone who threatened him in the parking lot.
The CPD officer then saw a plastic baggie, “common in drug distribution” in the open center console of Cheek’s vehicle, and noticed Cheek appearing extremely nervous with his hands shaking. A K-9 unit then arrived and alerted three times to something in the vehicle.
Cheek also failed multiple field tests for drugs. When told by the officer it was believed Cheek was under the influence of a depressant drug, Cheek advised he had taken Alprazolam earlier the day, and that he had a prescription for the drug.
The Ziploc baggie in the truck continued four of the prescription pills.
Cheek was arrested for DUI (less safe), possession of a schedule IV controlled substance (Xanax/Alprazolam) and possession of prescription medication not in an original container.
Wallet returned
After someone’s wallet was left on top of their vehicle before driving off on I-20, it and its entire contents was returned.
A worker paving the roadway found the wallet, containing reportedly over $100, a checkbook, identification, credit cards and other misc. information, and turned it into the NCSO Tuesday. The NCSO contacted the owner, who said his daughter had placed it on top of their vehicle before it fell off.
Grill to go
Newton County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a theft at Lakeside Circle Tuesday.
According to reports, the resident told deputies she saw a black pickup truck hook its trailer hitch to a grill in the driveway before pulling away. When contacted by the NCSO, the owner of the grill said it was parked in the driveway with a lock on it.
