Shutouts galore

Newton County had an interesting night of football Friday as all three local teams played in lopsided shutouts during the last week before the playoffs begin.

Eastside was the star of the show, taking down previously undefeated Monroe Area High School in dramatic fashion by winning 35-0.

Newton also shut out their opponent Morrow High School by the score of 40-0, but Morrow had struggled mightily this season. Don't get us wrong, one of the most popular axioms in sports is that teams have to win the games they should win. Newton did that.

Alcovy, on the other hand, found themselves on the wrong side of the most lopsided game of the night. Lovejoy High School has run roughshod over Class AAAAAA, and Alcovy couldn't put a dent in the domination as it fell 56-0.

Nonetheless, we're proud of all three teams as they've all earned playoff spots, a great achievement for our athletic programs. Good job, young men. We know the next journey is the hardest, but we support you no matter what.
