Third person arrested in Smith murder

Jamarcus Tyrone Smith, of Covington, was the third person arrested in the investigation of the murder of 29-year-old Newton County resident Demario Smith.

Jamarcus Smith, of Anderson Road, was charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and party to a crime Monday. According to Newton County Sheriff's Sgt. Cortney Morrison, Jamarcus Smith had an active probation violation warrant.

Twenty-eight year-old Anthony Jerome Thrasher, of Morningside Drive in Covington, was arrested Nov. 12 and Jerrod McKnight was taken into custody shortly after the murder on Nov. 10.

Thrasher was charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and party to a crime. McKnight, 27, of Mountain Court in Covington, was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The three are believed to be involved in the fatal shooting of  Demario Smith during an alleged drug transaction on Nov. 8. The 29-year-old Newton County resident was shot on Ridge Avenue around 8:30 p.m. on that Saturday.

During the investigation, NCSO deteremined there was an alleged drug transaction and evidence was collected.
