WAYCROSS, Ga. (AP) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says a Waycross police officer shot an unarmed man while searching for a suspect in a killing.

The GBI said Friday it is investigating the shooting of 26-year-old Andrew Tyrone Poole at the request of Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner.

The Florida Times-Union reports (http://bit.ly/ISlOoN ) Poole was shot in the stomach Thursday by an officer searching for a homicide suspect inside an apartment. Mansfield says the officer fired after he saw a bedroom door opening upstairs after being told nobody was there.

Mansfield says Poole was unarmed and wasn't the suspect being sought.

District Attorney Rick Currie says Poole is expected to recover after undergoing surgery.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave. His name was not released.
