Walton deputy killed in wreck
Driver of other vehicle faces DUI, other charges

A Walton County Sheriff's Office lieutenant was killed Saturday night in an accident in North Hall and the other driver faces several charges .

Darren Hester, 46, and his wife, whose name wasn't immediately available, were aboard a motorcycle traveling south on Cleveland Highway when a truck turning into a gas station parking lot struck them, according to a dispatcher at the Georgia State Patrol post in Gainesville.

One accident victim was flown to an Atlanta area hospital.

Robert Lawrence Champine, 59, of Gainesville, was charged with first degree vehicular homicide, felony possession of marijuana, serious injury by motor vehicle, DUI and failure to yield the right of way.

The wreck took place at Hilltop Circle. Troopers received the call at 6:11 p.m.

According to the Walton sheriff's office, the other accident victim was Hester's wife and she is in critical condition.

Darren Hester served in uniform patrol at the sheriff's office and was the night shift supervisor.
