Ben Jones, the actor who played "Crazy" Cooter Davenport in "The Dukes of Hazzard," is credited with having helped destroy Newt Gingrich's Congressional career by leveling accusations of tax dodging at him, which ultimately led to his resignation from the speakership, according to an article on The Guardian's website.
Gingrich defeated Jones in the 1994 race for U.S. Congress, but the 450 pages of documents Jones sent to the House ethics committee harmed Gingrich's reputation, The Guardian writes. Gingrich was not reelected speaker and eventually quit Congress in 1998.
That scandal is again making news, and Gingrich's opponents are hoping it will sink his political career once again.
