SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Authorities are searching for vandals who damaged stones that honor soldiers killed and wounded in the 1779 Battle of Savannah during the American Revolution.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1fHx4ks) that the weekend vandalism left as much as $25,000 in damage to the Soldiers Stone Monument at Battlefield Memorial Park. The monument features 800 granite stones that sit atop submerged pylons and represent those who died or were wounded.

Authorities say the vandals, whose tire tracks cut circles in the grass and on top of the monument, damaged more than 70 stones. They say 35 of them had to be removed completely.

The monument property isn't equipped with security cameras, but Savannah-Chatham police planned to review footage from a traffic camera on nearby Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
