Officer, 2 public works employees save 2 children in fire

GRANTVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A Grantville home was destroyed by a fire, but two children were able to get out safely due with the help of a police officer and two public works employees.

The Newnan Times Herald (http://bit.ly/1eq4FqT ) reports authorities with the Coweta County fire department and Grantville police department responded to a call of a structure fire Wednesday afternoon.

Grantville Police Chief Steve Whitlock says officer Michael Mathis was the first to arrive on the scene and learned there were two children home.

Whitlock says Mathis entered the home and helped the children escape through a window with the help of two public works employees. The children were not injured.

Assistant Fire Chief Mitch Coggin says the fire may have originated in the garage, but it does not appear to be suspicious.
