ATLANTA (AP) — Authorities are urging motorists to stay off eastbound Interstate 285 north of Atlanta after a pedestrian crossing the roadway was struck and killed.

Sandy Springs Police Sgt. Ron Momon says the man was involved in an accident around 4:30 a.m. on Friday and was crossing the interstate when he was hit. The man's name was not released pending notification of his family.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Annalysce Baker says the eastbound side of the interstate was closed for several hours to allow authorities to investigate.

The DOT expects the interstate to re-open by 9 a.m.
