ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia prison officials are changing how they treat inmates with gender identity conditions, just days after the U.S. Justice Department weighed in on a lawsuit filed by a transgender prisoner.
The new Georgia Department of Corrections policy, which took effect Tuesday, says a mental and physical treatment plan will be developed for inmates with gender dysphoria. It also says treatment may go beyond treatment the inmate was receiving prior to incarceration and will be reviewed and updated as necessary.
Previously, the department's policy limited treatment to inmates identified as having gender dysphoria when they first came into prison. It said the inmate's status would be maintained, but nothing more.
In a court filing last week the Justice Department that gender dysphoria must be treated like any other medical or mental health condition.
