BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia teenager convicted of fatally shooting a baby in the face while trying to rob the child's mother faces sentencing before a judge who could send him to prison for the rest of his life.
A jury convicted 18-year-old De'Marquise (deh-mahr-KEES') Elkins of murder last month in the slaying of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago.
The boy was in his stroller and out for a walk with his mother in coastal Brunswick when he was shot between the eyes. The boy's mother and a younger teenager charged as an accomplice testified Elkins killed the child after his mother refused to give up her purse.
A sentencing hearing was scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Under Georgia law, Elkins must be sentenced to life in prison — with or without the possibility of parole.
