ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia Department of Education estimates that about 5,000 girls in the state are at risk for human sex trafficking each year, and many of those children spend some time in a public school.

That's why the state brought in law enforcement experts from Scotland Yard on Monday to talk to 30 educators from across the state about how to identify when a student is a victim of human trafficking and how to help them. The two-day seminar is the first in a series of workshops on the topic to be held between now and February.

Georgia lawmakers adopted one of the nation's strongest human trafficking laws this year, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has made cracking down on trafficking children one of its top priorities.
