CANTON, Ga. (AP) — The former treasurer of a metro Atlanta elementary school's PTA is accused of stealing more than $12,000 from the organization and more than $5,800 from another school's booster club.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Lt. Jay Baker says 40-year-old Kim Turman, of Canton, is charged with two counts of theft by taking and was released on $52,000 bond Monday night. It is unclear if she has an attorney.

Baker says Turman worked as treasurer of the Indian Knoll Elementary School PTA and for the Sequoyah High School girls' soccer booster club.

In a statement, Cherokee schools spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby said the alleged theft didn't involve school district money or personnel. Jacoby says the Georgia PTA audited the Indian Knoll PTA and the booster club recruited a retired accountant to conduct its audit.
