Atlanta suspends ad campaign advising not to run from police

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta officials are suspending an advertising campaign telling people not to run from police after complaints from the City Council.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc.com/1AZop97) that billboards with the message "Don't Run" will be taken down for now. The ads have a running man in a circle with a red line through it. Some say, in all capitals: "Stay calm. Don't run! Report police misconduct."

City Councilwoman Keisha Lance Bottoms says the campaign seems to send the message that people are doing something wrong by running.

The Atlanta Citizens Review Board coordinated the campaign. Executive Director Lee Reid says it was meant to send a "common sense" message not to worsen encounters with police. Reid says that if someone thinks a stop is harassment, it's better to cooperate and file a complaint than to run.
