Road construction around hospital

Drivers are going to have a few roadblocks on their way to Newton Medical Center due to construction on two roads during the next several weeks.

U.S. Highway 278 median
Beginning next Wednesday, drivers will no longer be able to make a left turn into or out of Newton Medical Center from U.S. Highway 278, as the Georgia Department of Transportation installs a permanent median on the highway to prevent dangerous turns.

Hospital Drive will become right turn in and right turn out only, according to a state press release, and the entrance/exit will have a concrete island, pavement markings and signage directing motorist to the right upon exiting Hospital Drive.

Construction is expected to start Wednesday, July 25, weather permitting.

Drivers wishing to travel west on U.S. 278 after leaving the hospital will be able to make a U-turn at the Adams Street intersection.

Hospital spokeswoman Linda Moseley said drivers can also get to the hospital by traveling from Mill Street to Tate Street.

Mill Street closed
In addition, Mill Street will be closed between Phedora Street and Newton Drive from July 30 to Sept. 1 because of construction.
