More than a dozen roads still blocked from Irma

COVINGTON, GA - Days after Tropical Storm Irma impacted Newton County, Public Works crews are working on clearing more than a dozen roads which remain blocked throughout the area.

Fourteen roads are still blocked due to trees or power lines being down. Five roads are closed due to downed power lines and three are closed due to trees blocking the roadway.

Crews began working on a list of 80 blocked roads early Tuesday morning, securing power lines, removing trees and making sure the area was safe enough for travelers.

Newton County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Fire Service teams and Public Works crews have all been working around the clock under the direction of the Newton County Emergency Management Agency.

Here is a full list of road closures as of Thursday morning:

  • Worsham Street - Closed between Mill Street and Wheat Street (electric truck)
  • Hazelbrand Road - Blocked from Cochran Road to Alcovy Trestle (tree blocking one lane in curve)
  • McMahon Road - Closed (power line down)
  • Old Bailey Creek Road - Closed (tree down)
  • Oak Hill West at Fourwood Drive - Closed (power lines down)
  • Parr Farm Road - Closed (work in progress)
  • Chestnut Road, which is just off Hwy 162 - Low hanging lines (line type undetermined)
  • Gum Creek Circle (work in progress - utilities predicting to not be completed by morning)
  • Stone Lea - 330 North Lake Circle (power lines down)
  • Stone Lea - 345 West Lake Drive (power lines and tree down) -Completion time to be next week.
  • Spring Court – Blocked to buses (low hanging wires)
  • Highway 142 at County Road 213 - Closed (Power lines down)
  • 246 Pitts Chapel Rd - Tree hanging over road by wire (too low for bus to pass)
  • Belcher Road - Closed (no students)
