COVINGTON, Ga. - Snapping Shoals Electric Membership Corporation is the 2017 Cornerstones Partners in Education Partner of the Year.

The announcement was made by Ralph Staffins, president of the Newton County Chamber of Commerce, at a May 3reception honoring all 160 organizations and individuals who donate time, talent, money or materials to support one or more of the Newton County School System’s (NCSS’s) schools.

Snapping Shoals, EMC has been supporting Newton County schools since 1986 when the Chamber of Commerce and the NCSS jointed founded an adopt-a-school program which evolved into the current Cornerstones Partners in Education Program. The principals for Newton College and Career Academy (NCCA) and Veterans Memorial Middle School independently nominated Snapping Shoals for this year’s partner of the year award.

In making the award, Staffins listed Snapping Shoals many recent contributions. General support to all NCSS schools has included numerous door prizes for the new teacher induction and orientation program, funds to support the book bus and thousands of dollars in grant money to support important projects and activities for which no funds would otherwise be available.

Additionally, Snapping Shoals has provided specific support to NCCA as well as Veterans Memorial Middle, Live Oak Elementary and Newton High schools. These contributions have included financial assistance for students and teachers; countless volunteer hours to teach and advise  students as well as judge competitions and projects; job shadowing opportunities for students; tools and materials to support student projects; a pickup truck; truckloads of wood shavings for use as bedding in the NCCA’s livestock barns; and more.

We are honored to accept this award,” Frank Askew, chief operating officer for Snapping Shoals, EMC, said. “Service to others is a key tenant of our cooperative. We can think of no better way to serve others than to partner in the educational process within the territory we serve.”

He added, “I want to say thank you to the educators in the room. What you do is vital; it’s the cornerstone to make sure our young people succeed and in turn our communities succeed.”
