COVINGTON, Ga. — A 17-year-old is facing murder and weapons charges connected to the recent death of a man found shot and killed at a residence near Fairview Elementary School.

Jayden Elijah Cuvilje, 17, of Fieldview Lane, was charged in connection to a shooting at 90 Arlington Drive in Covington.

The shooting left Deartavius Tarrico Rogers, 25, of Conyers, dead Sept. 14 just before 11 p.m., according to a warrant and incident report.

A Newton County sheriff’s deputy reported responding to a “penetrating trauma” in the area of Arlington Drive Sept. 14 at 10:55 p.m.

The deputy arrived at the scene and reportedly detained three subjects who were not identified.

He also observed “a male laying on his back with blood coming from his head in the driveway.”

“There was no signs of life for the male laying in the driveway so medical treatment was not rendered,” the deputy reported.

Crime scene technicians were called and detectives were notified to investigate the incident, the report stated.

Cuvilje was later charged with using a handgun to shoot and kill Rogers, a warrant stated.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office arrested Cuvilje and charged him with one count each of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Pistol or Weapon by Person under 18 years of age, Possession of a Firearm or Knife During Commission of or Attempt to Commit Certain Crimes, and Possession of Marijuana of Less than 1 Ounce.

Cuvilje was assigned a public defender for his defense in court, records show.

A witness statement was taken and the victim’s Toyota Tacoma truck was towed from the scene.

The report stated the relationship between the suspect and victim was unknown. An investigation was continuing Friday.
