In business since 1922, Ginn Motor Company is Newton County's oldest car-dealership.
For 10 years after opening, the car dealership was a franchise company for Ford. Then in 1932, the two Ginn brothers that started the company sold the franchise and took on the Chevrolet name, followed by Oldsmobile in 1946.
In early 2000 when General Motors quit making Oldsmobile, the company became a Chevrolet dealer only. In late 2007 Ginn Motor acquired Newton County's second-oldest car dealership, Walker Harris Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge.
Fortson first went to work for his father-in-law, S.A. Ginn, in 1969 and eventually took over the dealership when Ginn passed away in 1987.
"We are a family-owned company that has been here a long time," Fortson said.
With the cars from Walker Harris, Fortson estimates that Ginn Motor has about 300 cars and trucks for sale now.
Fortson said car sales have gone up in recent weeks while the sales of SUVs and trucks have tapered. However with the recent decline of gasoline prices, truck and SUV sales have begun rising again he said.
Ginn Motors is a full-service dealership with about 85 employees.
