1 local dead, 2 arrested after shooting

A Covington was shot to death Sunday night in Rockdale County, and two men have been arrested, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office 

Rockdale County deputies responded to a shooting on the 2600 block of Country Trace around 11 p.m. Sunday, where they found Alexander Derrick Hunter, 21, of Covington, dead, reportedly from the shooting.

Investigators determined the incident occurred during a clandestine meeting involving a weapon purchase.

One suspect, Christian Elijah Evans, 20, of Covington, was taken into custody around 2 p.m. Monday. A second suspect, Kahleil Barton-Smith, 21, of Conyers, was taken into custody just after 5 p.m. Monday.

Evans is charged with being a party to the crime of murder and armed robbery, while Barton-Smith is charged with murder and armed robbery. Both men are being held in the Rockdale County Jail without bond, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office.

Community members will have a chance to meet with RCSO deputies as a spokesperson confirmed that the RCSO block party and meet and greet in the Fieldstone View and Country Walk neighborhoods, off Salem Road, will still be held from 5-8 p.m., Saturday, May 31, on Country Walk Way.
