Wed Update: Tournament games postponed

With local schools still expected to be closed on Friday, the Region 2-AAAAAA basketball tournament is expected to begin Saturday with quarterfinal contests beginning at 11a.m.

The Alcovy girls basketball program will play at 11 a.m. Saturday against Lovejoy at Newton High in the tournament's quarterfinals. The Lady Rams have a first round bye.

The Alcovy and Newton boys programs will tip off at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfinal round.

Semifinal games will be held on Monday with championship games set for Tuesday.

The Region 8-AAAA boys and girls basketball tournament will resume play Friday night, weather permitting. If teams can not play on Friday, boys quarterfinal games will begin at 9 a.m. at Lanier on Saturday with girls semifinal games beginning at 4 p.m. The boys semifinal games will begin at 7 p.m. allowing championship games to be play on Monday.

The GHSA announced that teams could play twice in one day as long as there is a 4-hour interval between contests.

The GHSA announced that the Georgia High School Traditional Dual Wrestling Championships scheduled for this weekend have been postponed.

The state tournament was set to begin this weekend but has been pushed back to Feb. 21.


The opening round of the Region 2-AAAAAA boys basketball tournament has been postponed. No tournament games will be held tonight due to Dekalb County and Rockdale County schools closing.

Rockdale County was set to play the opening game at 4:30, with Newton vs. Alcovy to follow at 6 p.m.

The Eastside Eagles boys varsity basketball Region 8-AAAA tournament contest for Tuesday night has been postponed.

The Eagles were set to play Chestatee at 8:30 p.m. at Lanier High School in the opening round of the region tournament.
