After making it to the podium in her final year as part of Social Circle track and field, Zion Robinson signed on Tuesday, May 21 to continue her athletic career at Brewton Parker College.
Robinson penned her national letter of intent (NLI) inside of the Redskins gym alongside family, friends, coaches and teammates.
The ceremony was led by Social Circle athletic director Craig Hargrove, before the mic went over to track and and field coach Tim Kemp.
Following Kemp’s remarks, Robinson spoke to the crowd before putting pen to paper.
Prior to the signing, Robinson shared her emotions on the day she was signing her NLI.
“I am nervous, but I'm excited,” Robinson said. “I never thought I would get a track offer, even though my passion is to run track in my future. So, I am actually excited to see it and to go further with my track offer.”
Along with the opportunity to continue her track career, Brewton Parker also had Robinson’s major, which also led to her signing.
“It has my major. I want to major in criminal justice,” Robinson said. “So, why not major in what I want to major in and do something I want?”
Robinson’s track career began in seventh grade, and it was an influence from her brother.
Though she has been running track for an extended period of time, it was not until recently when Robinson began to believe she could do it at the next level.
“Last year, my eleventh grade year, It was the last year running with my sister,” Robinson said. “I had more improvement last year, and even more improvement this year. So, if I felt like I could do it, I could go to the next level and run with the U.S. team.”
As for her best event, Robinson pointed out a race in which she has improved her time during each of the past two seasons.
“My best event right now is the 200-meter, because I had the most improvement in that,” Robinson said. “I [went from a] 28 to running a 27.5”
Her senior season ended with her reaching the podium at the Class A-Division I championship.
In the girls’ 4x200-meter relay, Robinson teamed up with Jada Hyman, Sophia Fontenot and Brielle Price to place in second.
The team’s time of 1:44.88 set a new school record.
After missing out on a high placement in previous years, getting to the podium in her final chance meant a lot to Robinson.
“To be a state runner up, it was a great accomplishment,” Robinson said. “Because last year, we didn’t even make it to the podium.”
