Two weeks after winning the team state tournament for the first time in school history, the Social Circle Wrestling team won the Traditional Area Tournament for the first time in school history. The Redskins will be sending 13 grapplers to the 8-AA Eastern Sectional Traditional Tournament this weekend at Greater Atlanta Christian. The top four wrestlers in each weight classification (14) will advance to the Traditional State in two weeks.
The 4-AA Area Traditional Tournament was hosted by Social Circle High School last weekend where 10 schools competed. Only the top four placers in each weight class advance to Sectionals. The team scores and number of placers are as follows:
1) Social Circle 304 (13)
2) GAC 257.50 (12)
3) Wesleyan 127.50 (7)
4) Rabun County 107.50 (4)
5) Monticello 103.50 (5)
6) Riverside Military Academy 92.50 (5)
7) Washington-Wilkes 77 (5)
8) Ogelthorpe County 65 (3)
9) Union County 55 (1)
10) Green County 42 (1)
Of the 13 wrestlers going to Sectionals next week, Social Circle had eight Area Champions (106 Klye Morris, 120 Levi Leach, 132 James Corasanitti, 138 Reid Harris, 152 Cade Lackey, 170 Khamari Whimper, 182 Aaron Forrester and 195 David Engstrom). Finshing in second place for SCHS were (145) Travis Tyson, (160) Cameron Paschal and (285) Emmanuel Reese. Mitchell Clegg (126) and Ryan Harris (220) both placed third at the GHSA event.
Coach Randy Prater commented, “We wrestled very well. I thought that we might have had a chance to send all 14 to sectionals, but 13 is pretty good. It is the first time that Social Circle has won Traditional Area before, so I am very proud of the boys.”
Prater will have his work cut out for him next week at Sectionals. The Eastern Sectional will be especially tough this year because four of the top five teams from 2-AA Team State will be competing for the top four spots (Social Circle (1), GAC (3), Gordon Lee (4), and Lovett (5)). The Redskins have dominated all year, so it will be exciting to see how many advance past Sectionals to Traditional State.
