The Social Circle High School Redskins junior varsity wrestling team raided Rockdale High School’s Rumble at the Rock wrestling tournament on Saturday.
Rockdale hosted the 12-team junior varsity tournament, which included Alcovy, Appalachee, Heritage, Luella, M. L. King, Mountain View, Monticello, Morrow, Newton and Salem for the teams’ season openers.
While the Redskins were one of just two Class AA programs at the event, Social Circle placed all 15 wrestlers, capturing the overall team title. Rockdale finished second, while Newton and Luella finished third and fourth, respectively.
Social Circle captured nine individual titles out of the 17 weight classes. Rockdale followed behind the Redskins with three individual champions, while the Rams grabbed two first-place finishers.
Redskins Coach Randy Prater was happy with the success of his young grapplers.
"I was very pleased with our team’s performance at the junior varsity tournament this Saturday, but not surprised," Prater said. "These guys have really put in a lot of work in the offseason in the weight room and the wrestling room. They put in the work not only because they love the sport but because they know they have to. We have a lot of depth in a majority of our weight classes and it showed at the Rockdale tournament. We are at least two deep in almost every weight class and, in some, as much as three or four. And, in my opinion, they are all worthy of representing our team."
First-place finishers at the event for the Redskins included Stevie Howard at 120 pounds (4-0, 2 pins), Mitchell Clegg at 132 pounds (4-0, 3 pins), Dawson Queen at 132 pounds (4-0, 4 pins), Travis Tyson at 138 pounds (3-0, 2 pins), Cade Lackey at 145 pounds (3-0, 1 pin), David Engstrom at 145 pounds (3-0, 3 pins), Chase Stevens at 152 pounds (4-0, 4 pins), Ryan Harris at 182 pounds (4-0, 2 pins) and Emmanuel Reese at 285 pounds (4-0, 4 pins).
Social Circle also had three wrestlers place second in their brackets, including Trey Paschal at 120 pounds (3-1, 2 pins), Jacob Wilson at 145 pounds (2-1, 1 pin) and Cameron Paschal at 145 pounds (2-1, 2 pins). Luke Hamby (220 pounds, 5-1, 5 pins took third in his weight class and both Josh Craig (106 pounds, 3-2, 1 pin) and Colton Stairs (182 pounds, 3-2, 2 pins) took fourth place.
The junior varsity team returns to action Nov. 26 at the Elbert County Tournament, while the varsity Redskins host Heritage on Friday.
