The Social Circle Middle School girls basketball team made history Feb. 8, bringing home the Piedmont Athletic Conference Championship with a 36-22 victory over Putnam County Middle School in front of a capacity crowd at Jasper County High School.

Social Circle outscored its three tournament opponents by an average of 20 points, capping off a 16-2 season.

In the title game, the Lady Redskins went into the second quarter tied 2-2 and allowed just eight first-half points, taking a 10-8 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Social Circle’s offense found its rhythm, going on a 7-0 run to take a nine-point lead. The Lady Redskins led 24-16 after the third, clinching the game in the fourth with a 12-6 advantage, avenging their only home loss of the season to the Lady War Eagles.

Emerald Gibbs led all scorers with 12 points in the title game, giving the Lady Redskins their first championship in school history.

Social Circle began its tournament run with a 47-11 quarterfinals victory over Morgan County, with Elexia Robertson and Jada Franklin scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Lady Redskins advanced to the tournament final with 18 points from Amiyah Williams in a 43-20 win over Loganville. Jada Franklin also scored in double figures with 14 points.

The Lady Redskins team featured 14 players and one manager this season, including Nikeria Brown, Michelle Grenevich, Shaderyan Griffin, Shamarra Hardeman, Emily Jacobson, Mikaylah Jones, Jessica Owens, Rezasha Stillwell, Areonnia Vinson, Asia Williams, Kyia Williams, Franklin, Gibbs, Robertson and Williams.

Social Circle was coached this season by Antonio Franklin and Kiisha Gibbs.

Redskin fundraiser
The Social Circle High School wrestling and baseball teams will host their annual mattress sale fundraiser Feb. 22 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Social Circle High School.

The event will feature 20 different mattress styles in al sizes.
