The Social Circle Lady Redskins fell to 8-3 on the year with a 10-8 loss Wednesday evening at home to the Lady Rams of Newton.
"We expected a fight going into this game," Newton coach Virginia Waters said.
A fight is exactly what the Lady Redskins put up, but in the end it would be the Lady Rams who came out on top with the victory.
The Lady 'Skins struck first scoring two runs in the second inning. The first run scored on a throwing error from Newton's catcher allowing freshman Lindsay Link to score, and the second came on an RBI single from Alexis Austin.
The Lady Rams would not wait to answer. In the top of the third inning the rams batted around the batting order busting the game open putting five runs on the board to take a 5 -2 lead.
Social Circle would answer immediately in the bottom half of the inning after a host of errors that loaded the bases for the Redskins. Junior Brooke Barnes came through with a two-out bases clearing double knotting the score at 5.
The Lady Rams would score one more run in the fourth and then another in the sixth inning taking a 7-5 lead into the game's last half inning.
The Lady Redskins did not go quietly as Austin drove in the game-tying RBI. The Lady 'Skins had runners in scoring position with one out but failed to get the game winning run sending the contest into extra innings. In the top of the seventh inning the Lady Rams would bring in three runs making the score 10-7 and that's all they would need.
The Lady Redskins took one last shot at it scoring one run on Austin's third RBI of the evening making it 10-8 but costly mistakes on the bases by seniors led to the final outs of the game giving Newton County the win.
"Our seniors should know not to be that aggressive on the bases when you need four runs to win," Social Circle coach Kimberly Lamb said. "It was the mental mistakes that cost us this game, things we have worked on and know how to do, things we have to do better at."
The Social Circle High Lady Redskins will go for a win tonight against region foe George Walton Academy to try and stay undefeated in region play.
