Seminoles defeat Rams

On Wednesday afternoon, the Newton Rams softball team hosted the Seminoles of Salem at Newton High, falling 4-3 in non-region action.

The Seminoles’ go-ahead run came in the fifth inning off back-to-back throwing errors by the Rams.

“It just breaks your heart to lose a game like that,” Newton coach Virginia Waters said. “Errors are the one thing that kills us. All of their runs were unearned runs. They had two hits and we had six errors.”

The game began with the Rams taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the second inning, the Seminoles tied the game at 1-1 on a RBI-single and an error by Newton, which scored outfielder Mikayla Whitfield.

The Seminoles then took a 2-1 lead on an RBI-single by Lane Powell.

In the bottom of the third, the Lady Rams retook the lead on a 2-run inside-the-park home run by shortstop Ciara Bryan.

“She knows how to get on base,” Waters said. “Her speed is ridiculous and I just can’t say enough about her.”

The Rams carried a 3-2 lead into the fifth inning, but Salem scored the tying run on a Newton throwing error which allowed Whitney Lester to cross the place. On the very next play, Salem took the lead on another throwing error by the Rams, which scored Alexis Chisman, to give the Seminoles a 4-3 lead that they would not surrender.

“(We) did great,” Salem coach Ronnie Miller said. “They did a solid job hitting the ball. They threw a couple of errors (away) in the game and we were able to capitalize off of that.”

Newton’s currently has a 2-1 record in its region and will face Rockdale, Morrow and Lovejoy in region play to close out the regular season.
