Newton put everything it had into its final game of the 2013 season, but at times it was too much.
The Newton boys’ soccer team needed a win over Morrow to secure a fourth seed in Region 2-AAAAAA and a playoff berth, but the Mustangs pulled out the 1-0 victory.
Newton played well in the first half, attacking on offense getting many opportunities on goal. However, all the shots came up short, until Morrow found the net late I the first half.
Newton tried to tie it in the second half but wasn’t efficient enough, seeming to lose its cool as the game got chippy.
Two Newton players got yellow cards. Morrow played well defensively and did all they could to hold on to its lead.
Newton had some good chances in the last 10 minutes of the game. But they just couldn’t pull it off.
“I give a lot of credit to those guys,” Newton coach Lavonne White said. “They had a good season, and I wish we could have pulled it out.”
Newton finished the year 5-11 and in fifth in the region.
“For the young guys, they need to learn from this experience” said Coach White. “They need to look at these guys faces and if they don’t want to experience that feeling then they need to be dedicated and put in the work.”
