For his efforts on the gridiron throughout the course of the 2013 season, Newton High wide receiver Taylor Hawkins has been named Rams Athlete of the Week.
Hawkins has amassed an impressive total of receiving yards thus far this season, grabbing 18 catches for 256 yards through his first six games.
In the Rams’ 32-21 victory over the Druid Hills Red Devils, Hawkins grabbed four passes for 89 yards, including a touchdown catch of 69 yards.
Newton coach Terrance Banks said he saw that Hawkins could be a productive wideout for the Rams in his senior season, but he had to let the game come to him.
"Our staff saw the potential in Taylor when we first got here," Banks said. "He tried to press at the beginning of the season, but when he finally let the game come to him, it made a difference. He’s been playing well and works hard. He does everything he can do to be successful, and I think that’s going to help him in the future."
Hawkins said his progression this season has come from his patience.
"I kept working harder and harder in the weight room, the classroom and on the field," he said. "I’ve done everything I could to help my team this season and I think it’s paying off. We want to continue to show our heart this year and make a run in the playoffs.
The Rams travel to Locust Grove tonight to take on the Luella Lions at 7:30 p.m.
