After falling in the first match of a tri-match against Eastside on Thursday, the Newton Rams rebounded with a straight set win over Alcovy.

The Rams defeated the Tigers 27-25 and 25-12 in their final match of the regular season.

Kristine Cabane led the Rams with 13 service points and four aces, while Abigail Bugg paced Newton with four kills.

“We played consistent in our second match against Alcovy,” Newton coach Stacey Wells said. “If we had played this consistent against Eastside, I think we could have won that match. We were very close and I felt like we showed what we could do on the court when we're on. Even though we split today, I am happy we won our final regular season game. It’s a good win for the girls.”

The first set saw the Tigers jump out to a 10-5 lead, as Newton struggled to get its offense set. Back-to-back kills from Rosalyn Hawthorne cut the Tigers’ lead to 13-9, and the Rams fought their way back to within a point of Alcovy with a Bugg kill and an Aasha Kenney ace.

Newton took its first lead of the first set with three service points from Hawthorne, clinching the lead for good at 20-19 with a Hawthorne ace.

Both teams traded points, but a Hawthorne kill and an Alcovy hitting error ended the set with the Rams on top 27-25.

Cabane at the line
In the second set, the Rams controlled the match from the outset, doubling up the Tigers 20-10.

Cabane again led the Rams at the line with nine consecutive service points with Newton leading 12-9. Cabane recorded four aces during the run, extending the Rams lead to 10 points.

The Tigers did not score back-to-back points over the final seven points of the match, giving up points on two hitting errors and a service error at the line.

Bugg added a kill during the Rams 5-2 closing run, giving the Rams a 25-12 victory.

"We just kind of fell apart," Alcovy head coach Michelle Finley said. "We gave it away and fell apart in both matches.

It looked like we just stopped playing after we got up early. No one wants to lose a match like that."
Aleisha Lett led the Tigers with two kills and an ace.

Kayla Burns and Hawthorne both finished with two aces for the Rams, while Hawthorne finished just behind Bugg with three kills.
