Newton, both the girls and the boys, got convincing victories over county rival Eastside. The girls started it off with a 76-51 victory and the boys followed it up by winning 57-43.
The girls started the game off fast. Playing at their pace, the Lady Rams were up 17-5 in the first quarter. Newton capitalized off multiple turnovers and converted at the free throw line when they had the chance.
Eastside made an attempt to get back in the game in the second quarter, but the Lady Rams pulled away to lead 40-21 at the half. Freshman standout Alexcia Chatman led all scorers with 23 points for Newton and Janelle Cook posted 12 points for Eastside.
The Eagles started off strong against the Rams. After a low-scoring first quarter, Eastside led 9-6, but looked every bit to be in control. Then Newton struck and didn’t look back.
The Rams started to force the Eagles into turnovers and Eastside had no answer for Newton’s strong defense. Eastside’s Isaiah Miller led all scorers with 16 points. For the Rams, D.J. Hill (11) and Antonio Smith (13) were the only Newton players in double figures.
Eastside gets a shot at revenge next Saturday at Newton 4:30 p.m.
