The Newton High Rams softball team came into this season with great expectations after making it to the state playoffs last season.
"I expect the team to do very well. We’re a young team, but we have lots of talent," Newton head softball coach Virginia Waters said.
Though the Rams have only one senior this year, she is said to be the clear-cut, vocal leader. "Bri Weaver has come a long way, and I’m very proud of her," Waters said.
Waters added that she will also do her part as coach to make sure that her players are performing at their best.
"We’re going to just practice hard and play hard," Waters said. "I’m going to push them to levels they probably thought they couldn’t go.
"I’m going to help get them better mentally and physically," Waters said.
Newton began its season on Aug. 9 against Locust Grove. Despite falling short in a 10-2 loss, the Rams have since won their next two games and currently sit in first place in the 2-AAAAAA region.
The Rams were scheduled to take on Social Circle on Thursday, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather.
The game will be rescheduled, but the date has not been determined.
