After a tough loss to Stephenson on Friday night, the Newton Lady Rams bounced back on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 60-41 win over the Heritage Lady Patriots.
With neither team shooting particularly well from the field, the game would end up being decided at the foul line. The Lady Rams would attempt a total of 38 free throws and knock down 28 of them (74 percent). It was a physical battle but Newton was up to the task.
The Lady Rams scored first and never looked back. The first quarter was the Danyel Fourney show as she attacked the basket and scored 10 of her team-high 14 points. The Lady Rams had a 17-10 lead as the quarter ended.
It seemed as though the basket had a lid on it during the second quarter as Newton would only score once from the field. They did hit eight of 12 from the free throw line, however, and had a nine-point halftime lead, 27-18. The third quarter was fairly even and Newton headed to the fourth with a 10-point lead at 38-28.
Shots finally started to fall for the Lady Rams in the fourth quarter and they ran away with a 19-point win, 60-41. Emili Russ and Precious Price joined Fourney in double figures with 10 and 11 respectively.
Mikola Burks just missed double figures as she netted seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter. Tai Avery also chipped in with seven points. The win boosts the Lady Rams record to 16-5 (6-4 Region 2-AAAAA). They battled the Lady Cougars of Newnan last night at home. Check out the Friday Covington News for the results.
