After a successful year, the Newton baseball season came to an end this week.
Newton made it to the Class AAAAAA state baseball playoffs as the No. 4 seed from Region 2-AAAAAA, and the Rams headed to Sharpsburg Thursday to face the East Coweta Indians in a the opening double-header in the best-of-three series.
However, Newton fell 2-0 in the series, as the Indians advanced to the second round.
The Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead in Game 1, until East Coweta battled back to take the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
The Indians scores four more runs before the Rams cut into their lead with two more of their own, bringing the score to 5-3 in the third thanks to a two-run homer by Marcus Smith.
Newton’s Alex Johnson also earned himself a two-run homer in the top of the fifth, but East Coweta came out on top with a 15-5 mercy-rule victory.
The Indians dominated again in Game 2, taking home a 16-2 victory. The Rams ended the season with an even 14-14 overall record and 7-8 in the region.
