Thanks to South Gwinnett's 67-62 win over Archer Wednesday night in the first round of the Region 8-AAAAAAA tournament, the Newton Rams will face the Comets Friday night at 8:30 p.m. at Archer High School in Snelleville.

Newton bested the Comets in both of its regular season contests, defeating South Gwinnett 78-58 on the road on Dec. 9, and then again by a count of 82-63 on Jan. 20.

By beating the tournament hosts, the Comets raised their record to 14-9 overall. Despite an upset loss to Shiloh last Tuesday, the Rams are still considered the No. 1 team in Georgia and the 22nd ranked squad nationally by MaxPreps.

The Rams (24-1 overall) enjoyed a first round bye in the region tournament after claiming the regular season region title. The girls also had a first round bye after finishing second in the region, and will play the winner of the South Gwinnett-Rockdale game which is currently in progress.
