Newton baseball team set for playoffs

The regular season has officially ended for Region 2-AAAAA baseball. Newton High School joins Rockdale, Lakeside and Tucker as the four teams from the region to clinch playoff spots, and in the last week of the regular season, they battled it out for their final positions.

Newton (14-12, 7-8 2-AAAAAA) finished the season in the No. 4 spot while Rockdale (19-6, 12-3 2-AAAAAA) overtook Lakeside (19-7, 12-3 2-AAAAAA) as the top seed in the region.

The Rams fell to Rockdale in their three-game series to end the season. Despite 17 hits in the game, Newton fell 16-9 on Monday. The Rams had four hits on Tuesday, with two coming from standout senior Augustus Murray, but they were not enough as the Rams fell 3-2.

Newton had 9 hits in Thursday’s game but still could not keep up with the Bulldogs’ 12 runs, falling 12-3.

Lakeside went 3-0 against Tucker (13-13, 8-7 2-AAAAAA) in their final series of the season, winning 7-3 on Monday, 7-5 on Tuesday, and coming out with a close 8-7 victory on Thursday.

Region winners will be reported to the GHSA on Monday, and the first round of the State Baseball Tournament set to begin April 29-30.
