Newton’s girls exacted revenge for a pair of losses to Eastside last year with a 46-34 win Saturday.
The Lady Rams raced out to a 13-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
It’s always nice to get a W in the first place and anytime it’s a rivalry game, it’s good to bring those home,” Newton coach Tiffani Johnson said.
The tandem of Precious Price and Mikola Burks had it going from outside, hitting six 3-pointers between them. Burks led all scorers with 15 while Price had 14.
“Precious did a great job,” Johnson said. “We’ve been on her about being more aggressive and I think she was today. She was aggressive and confident.”
Alexia Somerset paced Eastside with 11 points with most of her damage coming early. She carried the scoring load for Eastside in the first quarter, finishing with five straight to close the gap to 13-8. But Burks and Price kept it going from outside in the second quarter with Price’s three at the buzzer extending Newton’s lead to 25-15 at halftime.
“It’s a good thing if our strength is on the inside and our scoring comes on the perimeter,” Johnson said. “Once everything clicks, we’ll be that much better.
The Lady Rams led by as many as 20 in the second half until Eastside closed to within 12 with 2:43 to play. Neither team scored the rest of the way.
