Grady takes first place at Newton X-country meet

Newton's Alex Grady took first place on his home turf as he helped Newton win its own cross country meet on Thursday.

The Rams won with 31 points, followed closely by Rockdale with 34 and Monticello with 100. Salem (103 points) and Alcovy (108) rounded out the boys' field.

Alcovy may have tied Salem for second place in the girls' field with 41 points, but the Tigers were barely edged out for the top spot by Rockdale, which finished with 40 points.

Grady finished in a time of 16:43.9, followed by Newton's Gabrielle Alvarez in 16:57.0 and Newton's Shemar Rannie in 18:02.1.

Rockdale's Antwonette Thomas took first place for the girls with a time of 20:54.8. Alcovy's Elizabeth Smith finished second in 23.59.0.

Other area finishers in the boys' field were Newton's Kameron Wallace in seventh with a time of 18.43.3, Sean McDuffie in eighth with a time of 18.43.9 and Randolph Barrett in 14th in 20:23.5.

Alcovy's highest boys' finisher was Parish Lee in 17th in a time of 20:56.7. Jeremy Branch finished 22nd in 22:07., Blake Stewart 24th in 22:09.2, Brian Lindsey 26th in 22:12.9, Dalton 36th in 23:30.2, Gregg Perry in 39th in 24:10.8, Ethan LeJeune in 44th in 24:24.5 and Harold Monte 45th in 24:31.4 for the Tigers.

Alcovy's top finishers on the girls' side were Arana Martin in seventh in 25:52.7, Alexis Emmanuel in eighth in 26:04.2, Brianna Archer in 10th in 26:33.4, Melissa Heard in 18th in 32:23.0 and Maranda Martin in 21st in 33:14.6.

Maiya Newton led Newton with a sixth-place finished 25:29.8.
