COVINGTON, Ga. — One of Newton High’s own is considered one of the top 300 players in the country for the Class of 2021, according to ESPN.

Nyland Green, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound 4-star cornerback from Newton checked in at No. 277 on the EPSN Junior 300 rankings which were released at the end of July. It’s the latest national accolade for Green who currently holds 10 offers from Power Five schools, including an overture from defending national champion Clemson.

Green burst onto the national recruiting scene during his sophomore year when he snagged his first Power Five offer from Rutgers. Though he played just six games for Newton in the 2018 season, he impressed, grabbing three interceptions to go along with 17 total tackles and a fumble recovery.

One of those interceptions came along with a 95-yard touchdown return during Newton’s 27-14 win over Shiloh back on October 25. Green has benefited from a solid offseason that’s catapulted him up the recruiting rankings. According to 247Sports he’s the No. 21 ranked corner in the country and the 24th ranked overall player in Georgia.

Green, who started his career as a wide receiver before switching to provide more depth in the Newton secondary, figures to be an important cog in a retooled Rams football program for the 2019 season that features new coach Camiel Grant, Jr. Defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator Josh Skelton said he expects Green to contribute on both sides of the ball this season.

Green is one of 25 Georgia players to make the ESPN list. One other player from a school on Newton’s 2019 schedule also appeared on the list. Phil Mafah, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound running back and 4-star prospect from Grayson is ranked No. 279.

Newton will host it’s Region 8-AAAAAAA for Grayson on Friday October 25 at Sharp Stadium in Covington.
